Heart arrhythmia

Heart arrhythmias are disruptions in a regular heart rhythm, which can include slow, irregular or fast heart beats. They occur when the electrical impulses to the heart stray from their normal sequence and can range from being harmless to life-threatening.

Understanding arrhythmias

Cardiac arrhythmias can occur at any age. Some pose no danger, but others can lead to congestive heart failure and cerebrovascular accidents (strokes). In fact, about 15 to 20 percent of all strokes occur in people with AFib, the most common arrhythmia. This means a person with AFib is five times more likely to have a stroke than a person with a normal heartbeat.

Heart arrhythmia symptoms

The heartbeat can be too slow (bradycardia), too fast (tachycardia), or irregular. Some symptoms of these types of arrhythmias include:

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sensations of a missed, skipped or extra heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness
