Tampa, FL — The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, a part of HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital, is proud to recognize Parathyroid Disease Awareness Month, joining healthcare organizations nationwide in raising awareness about this often overlooked endocrine disorder and shining a light on hyperparathyroidism — a condition that can lead to numerous health issues if left undiagnosed.

Hyperparathyroidism typically arises from tumors on the parathyroid glands, leading to elevated calcium levels in the blood, which may cause a variety of symptoms, including bone loss and osteoporosis, kidney stones, fatigue, and depression, and other serious complications if left untreated.

“There is no pill or medication to cure hyperparathyroidism,“ said Dr. Jamie Mitchell, parathyroid surgeon at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery. “The only way to effectively treat this problem is to figure out which parathyroid gland has the tumor and remove it. At experienced centers, like the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, this is an outpatient procedure which takes about fifteen to twenty minutes to perform, it’s incredibly safe and not difficult to recover from.”

During Parathyroid Awareness Month, the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery is emphasizing the importance of seeking treatment for hyperparathyroidism and selecting the most experienced surgeon. Read more information about the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery.
