Mark Kodberg, Emergency nurse at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, exemplifies the hospital's culture of safety at every level. He received the Good Catch Award after recognizing early signs of stroke in a patient and escalating care, triggering a rapid stroke alert and life-saving treatment.

HCA Florida Englewood Hospital has been named a 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient by Healthgrades, placing it among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety for the second consecutive year and in the top 10% for eight straight years.

The distinction reflects the hospital’s sustained focus on clinical quality, risk reduction and patient-centered care. Healthgrades, a leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals, evaluates performance using objective measures of patient outcomes.

“This recognition reflects our team’s unwavering commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care to every patient we serve,” said Kelly Lindsay, CEO of HCA Florida Englewood Hospital. “Through ongoing staff training, rigorous safety protocols and strategic investments in advanced technology, we continue to strengthen a culture where patient safety is embedded in every process and every interaction. We recently marked 24 consecutive months without a hospital-acquired infection, reflecting sustained performance in infection prevention and clinical quality.”

Healthgrades based its rankings on risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates from approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 13 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Each indicator represents a serious but potentially preventable complication.

The analysis identified substantial performance differences between the nation’s highest- and lowest-performing hospitals.

During the 2022-2024 study period, 167,228 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients nationwide. Four indicators accounted for nearly 78% of those events.

Compared with patients treated at non-award-winning hospitals, patients at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital and other award recipients were significantly less likely to experience the following complications:

  • In-hospital falls resulting in fracture — 52.4% less likely
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure in or around the chest — 57.5% less likely
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital — 67.8% less likely
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital — 71.9% less likely

"The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications,” said Dr. Alana Biggers, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades. “By prioritizing evidence-based safety practices, Englewood Hospital is achieving better clinical outcomes and cultivating a culture where patients come first.”

Results represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
