Imaging services

Imaging exams allow radiologists (imaging specialists) and physicians to view structures and activity within the body. This is vital for diagnosis but also for treatment, to ensure your care plan is working as it should.

Conditions we diagnose through imaging

Radiology and diagnostic imaging help us screen, diagnose and treat many medical conditions, including:

  • Brain diseases
  • Broken bones
  • Cancer
  • Chest pain
  • Gallstones
  • Heart conditions
  • Internal bleeding
  • Osteoporosis
  • Thyroid disease
  • Vascular conditions

Imaging services

Our hospital is equipped with the advanced technology needed to perform a wide range of imaging procedures, including:

  • Bone density scanning— This screening, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), is an enhanced X-ray technique used to measure the strength and density of your bones. A DEXA scan is a quick, noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure which requires no anesthesia.
DEXA screenings use an extremely small dose of radiation. In fact, it is less than an average day's exposure to natural radiation and less than a tenth of the radiation dose in traditional X-rays. These screenings are helpful in orthopedic care, such as assessing your risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan— Our 64-slice CT scanner provides complete cross-sectional pictures of your body. Physicians use these 3D images to detect broken bones, blood clots, cancer, signs of heart disease and internal bleeding. Additionally, a CT scan can be used to help guide biopsy procedures.
  • Fluoroscopy and routine X-rays
    • X-rays use small doses of radiation to create pictures of your internal bodily organs and structures. Our physicians may use X-rays to:
      • Determine bone fractures and joint injuries
      • Diagnose heart and blood vessel obstructions
      • Find tumors
      • Identify an infection
      • Locate the cause of an intestinal obstruction
      • View possible fluid in the lungs
    • Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique which shows continuous X-ray images, similar to a video, on a monitor. As an X-ray beam is passed through the body, the continuous detailed images show movement of a contrast dye, body part or an instrument. A physician is then able to observe any possible health conditions which will need diagnosis and further treatment.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)— Highly trained technologists use magnetic resonance imaging as a way to examine your organs, tissues and skeletal system. It is a noninvasive imaging tools which use a magnetic field, instead of X-rays or radiation, to produce high-quality images in multiple planes.
Physicians commonly use MRIs to examine the brain, head, abdomen, pelvis, spine, bone and joints. This aids in the diagnosis of a range of disorders and injuries. MRIs are also used to determine how effectively prescribed treatments and medications are working. Learn about our recent $4.4 million investment in MRI and Nuclear Medicine technology.
  • Nuclear medicine— Nuclear medicine uses small doses of radioactive substances to pinpoint molecular activity within your body. In real time, physicians can view the functioning of the body and evaluate chemical and biological processes. This allows for the early detection of diseases, often before the structural changes can be seen on a CT scan or MRI.
This noninvasive, painless imaging method is commonly used to diagnose and treat certain cancers and heart disease and bone, neurological, gastrointestinal and other disorders.
  • Ultrasound — This noninvasive and painless test uses high-frequency sound waves to create video images of see the size, shape & real-time movement of organs and soft tissues. These imaging tests are also used to diagnose an array of health conditions, including abnormal growths, heart disorders and blood clots.

Breast health services

A mammogram could save your life. Mammograms, which use low-dose X-ray imaging, are used to examine the breasts. We offer digital screening and diagnostic mammograms including 3D mammography, the latest technology used to screen for breast cancer. They allow our physicians to diagnose and treat breast tumors and other breast anomalies. Learn more about breast cancer screening services and recommended ages for screening.

Heart imaging

Your heart muscle is complex and requires specialized imaging tools to create clear images. The cardiology services at our hospital include multiple types of advanced heart imaging, including:

  • Echocardiograms (EKG) - An EKG uses sound waves to measure the electrical activity of your heart. This test is used as part of our overall cardiology program and allows us to check your heartbeat patterns and possible abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Electroencephalograms (ECGs)
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms
  • We also have an on-site cardiac catheterization laboratory where we perform diagnostic testing, such as:
    • Cardiac angiography and intervention
    • Peripheral angiography and intervention

Imaging results

Test results are generally available within 24 hours via our picture archive communications system (PACS). This quick turnaround happens because PACS allows digital images and reports to be electronically transmitted directly to your physician. Same-day results are also available for urgent requests.
