At 77 years old, Bill Delia — a Clermont resident, retired pastor, musician, and author — went in for what he expected to be a routine exam with his cardiologist. Instead, he received unexpected news: he needed a quadruple heart bypass.

“When I was told I needed a quadruple bypass after what started as a routine test, it was overwhelming. I’ve had AFib for years, but I’ve always stayed active. Hearing I had four blocked arteries at 77 — you start wondering what that means.”

His cardiologist referred him to Dr. Steven Hoff, Regional Cardiovascular Surgery Medical Director at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital for off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery — an advanced technique performed without the use of a heart-lung machine, designed to reduce strain on the body and support improved recovery.

For more than a decade, Bill had managed intermittent atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heart rhythm that can increase stroke risk. While his AFib would be addressed during surgery, the primary concern was something he hadn’t felt — serious blockages in his coronary arteries.

Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) restores blood flow to the heart by rerouting blood around blocked arteries using healthy vessels from elsewhere in the body. At HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, Bill underwent a quadruple bypass, along with a left atrial appendage ligation to help reduce stroke risk associated with AFib.

“This off-pump approach — performed on the beating heart—can reduce complications, shorten recovery time, and is a safe, effective option for a wide range of cardiac patients, from younger adults to older individuals,” said Dr. Hoff.

With the support of Dr. Hoff and a skilled, compassionate surgical team, Bill underwent the procedure with confidence.

Today, Bill is back to doing what he loves — with noticeable improvements.

“My breathing is noticeably better, especially when I’m singing,” he shared. “I’m already back to playing golf. I was very impressed with Dr. Hoff and the care I received at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. Everyone was fantastic — I truly couldn’t have had a better experience.”

Bill’s experience is a powerful reminder that serious heart conditions don’t always present with symptoms — and that early detection, combined with advanced surgical care, can make a meaningful difference.

HCA Florida Osceola Hospital is proud to be among the few hospitals in the region offering off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, led by one of the most experienced surgeons in the country, Dr. Steven Hoff.
