Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is performed on patients with obesity. There are several types of bariatric procedures, but all focus on making modifications to the digestive system with the goal of significant weight loss.

Our bariatric surgery options

Obesity can lead to serious health conditions, such as certain types of cancer, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. To help you overcome obesity and take your life back, we offer many options for weight loss surgery.

Benefits of weight loss surgery

Weight loss can extend both the length and quality of your life. However, weight loss is not the only benefit of bariatric surgery. It can also resolve sleep apnea, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, menstrual dysfunction and venous stasis ulcers.

Candidates for weight loss surgery

If you are 100 pounds or more over your healthy body weight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery.

The term "morbid obesity" is commonly associated with surgical weight loss. Some qualifying factors that define morbid obesity include:

  • You weigh 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight
  • You have a BMI of 40 or higher or have a BMI of 35 or higher with associated health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes
  • You are unable to sustain a healthy body weight, even through medically supervised dieting

Weight loss surgery procedures we perform

Some of the weight loss procedures we perform include:

Sleeve gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy is an effective and safe weight loss operation. It removes the part of the stomach where a specific hormone is produced that makes you feel hungry. This helps prevent patients from feeling hungry all the time.

Performed via five tiny incisions, a sleeve gastrectomy allows permanent reduction in hunger and weight without implants or long-term nutritional problems.

Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass surgery changes how the stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat. The stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger, lower "remnant" pouch. During this minimally invasive procedure, the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both.

When combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, gastric bypass can result in long-term weight loss. These procedures have a low rate of complications and may be done robotically in some cases, resulting in faster recovery times, smaller incisions and less pain.

Duodenal switch (DS) surgery

DS with biliary pancreatic diversion (sometimes known as biliary pancreatic diversion with duodenal switch or BPD-DS) involves both a sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. This helps you feel fuller faster and reduces the amount of food you can consume. It is one of the more complex procedures but also typically results in the highest (80 percent) and longest lasting, long-term weight loss. It also significantly improves or even resolves Type 2 diabetes, gastric reflux, hypertension and sleep apnea.

Revisional bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgeries are excellent treatment options that help many patients successfully lose weight. However, as with any surgery, some patients may not experience the results they want. In these cases, you may need follow-up or additional bariatric surgery. Because these patients have already had bariatric surgery before, this type of surgery is called "revisional" bariatric surgery.

This type of surgery is very complex and our teams know this procedure has to be personalized to your needs and unique situation. We will do everything we can to work with you in these cases. We will talk about your goals and discuss all your options with you to be sure you understand and feel comfortable with your treatment plan. Whether you had your initial surgery with us or at another facility, we can help you find a path forward in your weight loss journey.
