Our digestive health services

Whenever possible, our experienced GI doctors use minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical techniques as a benefit to your overall well-being.

Diagnostic colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an internal examination of the colon (large intestine) and rectum that uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera, called a colonoscope. It can be completed in less than an hour, and is performed under mild sedation to relieve discomfort. During the procedure, a doctor will use a video monitor to look for abnormalities, such as ulcers, polyps and tumors, as well as areas of inflammation or bleeding. If any irregularities are found, they can be biopsied or removed.

This minimally invasive outpatient exam is often used to screen for colon cancer, and can be used to evaluate a variety of symptoms such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habits or unexplained weight loss.

Colonoscopy for treatment

Not just a diagnostic procedure, a colonoscopy can also be used to remove polyps, widen narrowed areas or blockages, as well as address bleeding from diverticula or lesions. Specialized procedures, such as laser surgery or cauterizing techniques, may also be performed during a colonoscopy.

Colorectal surgery

Whenever possible, our surgeons treat colorectal conditions using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery. These types of procedures are rooted in smaller incisions, and can potentially offer a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

Endoscopic examination and treatment

An endoscopy allows your doctor to visualize numerous areas inside your body using an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube fitted with a camera. The endoscope can also be fitted with various devices such as lasers, ultrasound devices or tiny surgical instruments.

During this minimally invasive exam, the endoscope is passed through a natural opening in the body, such as the mouth or anus. Endoscopes can be used for a variety of procedures, including:

  • Arthroscopy, to visualize inside the joints
  • Bronchoscopy, to examine the airways and lungs
  • Cystoscopy, to view the inside of the bladder
  • Enteroscopy, to study the small intestine (small bowel)
  • Laparoscopy, to explore the abdomen or pelvis
  • Sigmoidoscopy, to assess the lower part of the colon
  • Upper GI endoscopy, to investigate the esophagus and stomach
