GERD diagnosis and treatment
Everyone experiences heartburn and acid reflux at some point. If you have heartburn or reflux twice a week or more, you may have GERD.
Causes of GERD
Normally after swallowing, a valve between the esophagus and the stomach opens to allow food to pass. This valve then closes to prevent stomach contents from backing up into the esophagus. For people who suffer from GERD, the valve does not function properly and is unable to prevent acid from flowing back to the esophagus. This causes a burning sensation in the chest.
Symptoms of GERD
Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD, but you may also experience:
- Asthma or asthma-like symptoms
- Bloating
- Burning in the mouth or throat
- Dental erosion or therapy-resistant gum disease or inflammation
- Excessive clearing of the throat
- Frequent swallowing
- Hoarseness or sore throat
- Intolerance of certain foods
- Pain or discomfort in the chest
- Persistent cough
- Sleep disruption
Although GERD is common, persistent chest pain should be evaluated by a doctor as it may be a sign of an underlying cardiovascular condition.
Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) procedure
TIF is an advanced procedure for safely and effectively treating chronic GERD. A completely incisionless procedure, TIF reconstructs the anti-reflux barrier (a small muscle in the esophagus) to treat the root cause of GERD.
Your doctor may recommend this procedure as an alternative to medication if your medication is no longer effective or not able to fully treat your GERD.
Colorectal cancer
When it comes to digestive health issues, one of the more critical concerns is the possibility of colorectal cancer. Fortunately, our trusted GI doctors and surgeons use early screening and innovative procedures, including colonoscopy, to prevent and diagnose colorectal cancer.
