Understanding stroke
A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident or CVA, occurs when a part of the brain’s blood supply is suddenly interrupted by a clot (a mass of blood) or when a blood vessel bursts. When blood flow is blocked, brain cells die because oxygen and nutrients cannot get through.
Stroke symptoms
By learning the signs of a stroke and acting quickly when they occur, you can prevent disability and death. Common stroke symptoms include sudden:
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Numbness, weakness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body)
- Severe headache with no known cause (may be accompanied by pain in the face or stiffness in the neck)
- Trouble seeing in one or both eyes (such as blurred, blackened or double vision)
- Trouble speaking
- Trouble walking
If you think you are experiencing a stroke, don't drive. Call 911. Getting immediate attention from a specialized stroke care team can dramatically increase the chances of survival and recovery for a person experiencing a stroke.
Stroke treatment
Our stroke team, comprised of emergency medicine physicians, nurses and neurologists, is specifically trained to treat a stroke. When a patient arrives at our stroke center, a physical exam is conducted, and tests are done immediately to identify the cause of the stroke.
Depending on the diagnosis, our specialists may perform a cutting-edge procedure that uses blood vessels to deliver tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) — a protein that breaks down blood clots — to specific parts of the brain. Other stroke treatments include carotid surgery and carotid artery stents.
Stroke support
We offer a Stroke Victors Support Group, which is designed to provide additional support and care to all stroke survivors and their families. The meetings take place in Conference Room 2 of our hospital at 2:00pm on the first Wednesday of the month.
