Conditions We Treat
Types of burns we treat - Burns are categorized by their "degree" of severity and include:
First-degree burns
First-degree burns are the least severe class of burn. They result in mild pain and skin reddening. Typically, these types of burns do not require advanced medical attention and resolve on their own with time. However, our specialists are available to evaluate your burn and help you understand how to help it heal.
Second-degree burns
Unlike first-degree burns, second-degree burns can result in blistering and swelling, in addition to being painful and reddening the skin. This class of burns is typically treated with skin ointments or creams.
Additionally, our specialists can treat deep second-degree burns with an application of a cadaver skin substitute, porcine (pig) skin substitute or an artificial skin substitute. These will aid in eliminating most of the pain from the burn and do not require dressing changes.
Most second-degree burns heal within 10 days after application of a skin substitute.
Third-degree burns
More severe than a second-degree burn, third-degree burns damage nerve endings. This class of burn results in a thickness to the skin, as the outer layer and inner layers of the skin have been damaged.
Third-degree burns are typically treated with a split-thickness skin graft (STSG). During an STSG procedure, a surgeon will remove a thin layer of skin from a donor region — typically the thigh, back, abdomen or buttocks — to cover the site where the burn is located.
It is common for the burned region to fully heal in about two weeks.

- Collagen — a protein that exists in connective tissue, which helps hold structures in the body together and promotes new tissue growth
- Debridement — the surgical removal of burned flesh from a wound
- Necrosis — the death of cells or tissues
