Conditions treated in a trauma center
Trauma centers are specialized units within an ER that are equipped to treat major traumatic injuries, including:
- Brain injuries, such as concussions
- Crush injuries
- Electrical injuries
- Major burns
- Puncture wounds
- Spine fractures and other broken bones with the potential to cause long-term disability or death
Specialized trauma services and levels
Trauma centers are categorized into four levels. At HCA Florida, we offer access to both Level I (the highest level of trauma care) and Level II Trauma Centers. ,Trauma centers are categorized into four levels. Level I Trauma Center
Level I Trauma Centers provide:
- Advanced care to trauma patients
- A full range of advanced trauma specialists available 24/7
- Care for pediatric patients
- Continued research about traumatic injuries
- Education about trauma prevention to surrounding communities
Level II Trauma Center
Similar to a Level I Trauma Center, a Level II Trauma Center can initiate trauma care for patients and offers:
- A full range of advanced trauma specialists available 24/7, including:
- Anesthesiologists
- Critical care specialists
- Emergency medicine doctors
- Internal medicine doctors
- Radiologists
- Surgeons (such as general, neurologic, cardiothoracic and plastic)
- Referrals to a Level I Trauma Center
- Trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff
- However, different from a Level I Trauma Center, a Level II Trauma Center does not focus as heavily on prevention, education and rehabilitation.
Our trauma specialists
Our emergency care physicians are dedicated to providing you with fast, expert trauma care. One of the ways we do this is through our partnership with the University of South Florida (USF) Health to form a statewide trauma network.
This network of expert providers is committed to improving access to quality trauma care and services in Florida. Today our trauma network includes eight Level II trauma programs and one Level I trauma program. This is in addition to hundreds of trauma care experts who work in collaboration with our other emergency care providers to help you heal quickly and effectively.

- Emergency physicians and physicians assistants
- Emergency medical technicians (EMTs)
- Internal medicine doctors
