Rebecca and Colton
Near the soft hum of the elevators that would soon help bring his newborn son safely home, a father strummed a guitar in a heart-felt tribute to the team that had just helped bring him into the world. “It was my gift to them for how amazing they were,” Colton said. He chose “Let It Be Me,” a song that symbolized the love Colton and his wife, Rebecca, felt during their birth experience at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital.
The touching moment was the pitch perfect finale to a journey that began months earlier when the couple moved from New York to Florida. “We didn’t really know much about the hospitals here,” Colton explained. “She did her homework and chose St. Lucie Hospital because of all the good reviews. Everyone was very happy with the staff, and the care seemed to be the best in the area.”
From the very beginning, the couple’s own experience reinforced what they had read. “We did the birthing class there and it was awesome,” Colton said. “We both felt much more prepared. When we did the tour and were able to meet everyone, we were hooked.”
With birth plan in place, Rebecca was able to advance in her pregnancy confidently and comfortably; she even labored at home until her water broke. “She was already six centimeters dilated when we got there. The team was ready for us. Coming into the hospital was almost too easy,” Colton said.
Rebecca’s labor lasted another nine hours. As the emotional and physical toll intensified, the nursing team never wavered. “Everyone was just wonderful,” she said. “I was getting tired and frustrated, but the nurses were always positive. They helped me stay focused and encouraged me the whole way.”
Support didn’t stop after delivery. “I was having issues breastfeeding and the lactation specialist helped. We were just so happy with how everything went.”
As Colton prepared his family for the trip home, that sense of appreciation was given a voice through song. A self-taught musician, he had originally brought his guitar to comfort Rebecca, but her extended labor required his support in other ways.
Now, the opportunity shifted to have a different focus and a new audience. “It’s one of those songs about just being there for people,” Colton explained. “It felt right because the nurses were there for us.”
Colton said he hopes their story and the song gives caregivers a moment of peace and makes them feel good about what they’re doing at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital. “Thank you, thank you again,” he said, adding, “And if we have any more babies, we know where to go!”
