A legacy of care: A family's three-generation journey with HCA Florida Healthcare
The French family's healthcare journey began in 1997 when John French became a physical therapy assistant at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, unknowingly influencing future generations.
Family traditions often shape our paths, and for the French family, the healthcare journey began in 1997, when John French took his first steps into the medical world as a physical therapy assistant at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, formerly known as Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. Little did John know that his influence would ripple through generations, guiding his son's and grandson’s careers.
Justin French, John's son, started his journey as a physical therapy technician when he was just 17 years old in 1999. Those early years were foundational. "I learned the ropes of patient care and the importance of compassion in healthcare," said Justin. "Working alongside my father, I witnessed firsthand the difference a dedicated healthcare worker can make in a patient's life. The staff's camaraderie and patient gratitude instilled a deep appreciation for the medical field in me."
After four enriching years, life took Justin to Indiana, where he started a new chapter growing his family. He pursued his passion there and became a registered nurse (RN), serving the community for seven fulfilling years. The experiences he gained in Indiana enriched his skills and deepened his commitment to patient care.
In 2020, Justin's family decided to return to Florida. His father, John, had continued to work at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital and HCA Florida Northwest Rehabilitation Center throughout Justin’s time away.
"The rehab facility was actively seeking RNs, and it felt like the perfect fit," said Justin. "I applied immediately, and in August 2020, I began my role as an RN at HCA Florida Northwest Rehabilitation Center."
Fast-forward to the summer of 2024, when Justin was offered the position of clinical nurse coordinator. This role has allowed him to take on greater responsibilities and continue to impact patient care on a broader scale.
Around the same time Justin was transitioning into his new role, his 19-year-old son Jacob expressed a desire to pursue a career in healthcare. Jacob became interested in the patient care tech (PCT) role. In July 2024, Jacob joined HCA Florida Northwest Rehabilitation Center as a PCT, stepping into a position that was a continuation of their family legacy.
"Jacob has flourished in his new role, consistently receiving positive feedback from patients and staff," said Justin. "Watching him embrace the values of empathy and dedication that my father instilled in me is incredibly rewarding. It's a full-circle moment that reinforces the impact of our family's commitment to healthcare."
Reflecting on their journey, Justin is grateful for his father's guidance and instilled values, stating, "Our family has been blessed with the opportunity to serve others, and I am excited to see how our legacy of care continues through Jacob."
